Frequently asked questions

Straight answers to the questions we are asked most often.

Working with Vertexa

Most engagements begin with a two to four week discovery: we work with the people who do the job today, map the existing system, and produce a costed delivery plan. From there we deliver in two-week increments with working software in your environment at the end of each one.

You can stop at the end of discovery with a plan you own, and take it elsewhere. Several clients have. We would rather that than build the wrong thing.

Discovery work can usually start within two to three weeks. A full delivery team takes four to six weeks to assemble properly — we do not staff engagements with whoever happens to be free.

Frequently. Roughly half our engagements are blended teams. We are equally happy leading delivery, embedding specialists into your team, or coaching your engineers through a capability they are building for the first time.

We deliver globally from hubs in the United Kingdom, Europe, West Africa and East Africa, with team members across several time zones. For most clients we guarantee a minimum of four overlapping working hours with your core team.

Yes, entirely. Source code, infrastructure definitions and documentation are yours from the first commit, held in your repositories where you prefer that. We hold no intellectual property over work we build for you.

Projects and delivery

We estimate ranges, not points, and we show the assumptions behind them. After discovery you get a plan with a confidence band; as work proceeds that band narrows and we tell you promptly when something moves outside it.

They always do. The delivery model assumes it: scope is reviewed every two weeks and you can reprioritise anything not yet started at no commercial penalty. Changes that affect the overall envelope are agreed explicitly before work begins.

Automated tests are written alongside the code, not after it, and they run on every commit. Beyond that we run accessibility audits, load tests and a security review before any launch, with the results shared in full.

Documented architecture, runbooks, monitoring dashboards, and structured sessions with your engineers. We consider handover complete when your team has operated the system for a sprint without us — not when the documents are delivered.

Pricing and billing

Two models. Fixed-price for well-defined scopes with a clear specification, and time-and-materials for exploratory or long-running work where fixing the scope would be dishonest. Discovery is always fixed-price so you know the cost of finding out.

Yes, at a fixed price agreed up front. Discovery produces real artefacts — architecture, plan, estimate — that have value whether or not you continue with us.

Monthly in arrears on 30-day terms for retained work, and against milestones for fixed-price engagements. Enterprise clients can arrange quarterly billing.

Project work generally starts around six weeks. For ongoing support and managed services the minimum term is three months.

Security and compliance

Under a written data processing agreement, with access limited to the individuals who need it, all access logged. We work within your environment and your accounts wherever possible, so production data does not leave your control.

All staff undergo background checks appropriate to the sector they work in, including enhanced checks for financial services and healthcare engagements. Every engineer completes annual security training.

We regularly deliver under GDPR, PCI-DSS, ISO 27001, SOC 2 and sector-specific regimes. Bring your control framework to discovery and we will map our delivery process onto it explicitly.

Yes. Certificates are available on request during procurement.

Support and maintenance

Tiered support from business-hours response through to 24/7 on-call, with response and resolution targets written into the agreement. All tiers include proactive monitoring and dependency patching.

Yes. We start with a paid technical assessment so we understand what we are taking on and can commit to service levels honestly.

You leave. Contracts have a 30-day notice period, everything is already in your accounts and repositories, and we run a structured handover as part of the exit at no additional cost.
